OCELI Project Wraps Up: AI-Bee Collaboration for Sustainable Farming

How bees and AI teamed up to protect pollinators and make farming more sustainable.
Research and Breakthroughs

As part of a growing movement toward AI-enhanced agriculture, the OCELI project, supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, has successfully demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be used to monitor pollinators and promote more sustainable farming practices.

🎥 Smarter Bee Monitoring with AI
At the heart of OCELI is a smart monitoring system developed by apic.ai, featuring energy-autonomous cameras placed at hive entrances. These devices capture continuous footage of bees, which is then processed with AI algorithms developed by FZI. The AI identifies individual bees, tracks pollen collection, and recognizes behavioural patterns—providing valuable insights into pollinator health and activity.
Field trials by Eurofins Agroscience Services showed how this system can detect stress effects from pesticides, especially in young bees. The collected data offers real-time ecological monitoring in agricultural environments.

📊 Data Meets Ecology
Using the Cadenza platform, over 70 environmental variables—from temperature to land use—were analyzed with machine learning. Explainable AI (SHAP values) revealed that time of day, temperature, and biodiversity had the greatest influence on bee behaviour. Simulations using the BEEHAVE model validated these insights, helping researchers predict colony health impacts over time.

🌱 A Step Toward Pollinator-Friendly Farming
The OCELI project proves that combining AI and ecology can support smarter agricultural decision-making. Its tools enable more pollinator-conscious practices and open new opportunities for balancing productivity with biodiversity.
