Employing saiwa to work identifying invasive species

We are pleased that in our collaboration with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) we produced an automatic European Water Chestnut (EWC) detection software that will advance DUC’s capability of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based detection and surveillance of EWC through machine learning.

This method has the potential to be tailored and adapted for the localization of other invasive species in the near future!

European water chestnut is a widespread invasive species, found commonly in the northeastern United States—and consequently along bordering waters in Ontario. To stop the spread of this invasive aquatic plant, Ducks Unlimited Canada has been working since 2014 to control and remove European water chestnut from our wetlands and waterways.
